How to resize an image

  1. 1

    Add the image

Drop it onto the page or choose it. The size fields open with its current dimensions.

  2. 2

    Enter the new size

Change the width or the height. With Keep aspect ratio on, the other side updates automatically.

  3. 3

    Save it

Select Optimize image, check the result and download it.

Keep the proportions or set both sides

With Keep aspect ratio on, PixMino calculates the other side from the original proportions and rounds it to whole pixels. A 4032 × 3024 photo resized to 800 px wide becomes 800 × 600.

Turn it off when you need exact dimensions such as 1080 × 1080. When the new shape differs from the original, you choose what happens:

  • Crop: fills the size and trims the edges, keeping the centre.
  • Fit on background: keeps the whole image and fills the rest with a colour you pick.
  • Stretch: fills the size exactly, distorting the shapes.

Making images smaller

Halving the width and height leaves a quarter of the pixels, and the file usually shrinks by a similar share. For images shown at small sizes, such as thumbnails or product photos, that's often the most effective way to save space.

PixMino reduces large images in stages, which keeps edges and fine detail smoother than one big jump.

Making images larger

You can enter dimensions larger than the original, but enlarging can't add detail that isn't there, so the image will look softer. PixMino points this out when you do it.

The largest image PixMino creates is 16,384 pixels per side. On iPhone and iPad the browser allows less: about 16.7 megapixels in total.

Supported formats

PixMino opens five formats and saves four. HEIC photos from iPhones are saved as JPG or PNG.

JPG

Best for
Photos and images with soft gradients.
Transparency
Not supported.
Compression
Lossy, with adjustable quality.

PNG

Best for
Screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges or text.
Transparency
Supported.
Compression
Lossless. Can use fewer colours where the change is invisible.

WebP

Best for
Websites that need small files.
Transparency
Supported.
Compression
Lossy, usually smaller than JPG at similar quality.

AVIF

Best for
The smallest photo files for modern websites.
Transparency
Supported.
Compression
Lossy, often smaller than WebP. Slower to create.

HEIC

Best for
Photos taken on iPhone and iPad. Opened by PixMino, saved as JPG or PNG.
Transparency
Not used by camera photos.
Compression
Lossy and very efficient, but poorly supported outside Apple devices.

AVIF and HEIC use codecs downloaded the first time you need them; after that they work offline. Animated images are converted as a single frame.

Questions

How do I resize without stretching the image?

Leave Keep aspect ratio on and change only one side. For an exact size with different proportions, choose Crop or Fit on background.

Will resizing reduce the file size?

Usually, yes: fewer pixels means less to store. You can also set a file size limit in the same step.

Can I resize by percentage?

Yes. Use the 75%, 50% and 25% buttons next to the size fields, or Scale in batch mode.

Can I resize many images to the same size?

Yes. In Batch mode, choose Fit within to cap the width and height of every image, or Exact size to give them all the same dimensions.
