Where AVIF comes from
AVIF is a newer format based on the AV1 video codec. Websites use it because it often produces the smallest photo files of any common format. When you save an image from such a site, you may end up with an .avif file that your editor or a form doesn't accept.
What changes in the JPG
The JPG is usually larger than the AVIF at similar quality; that's the price of compatibility. Set a size limit if you need to stay under one.
AVIF supports transparency and JPG doesn't, so transparent areas are filled with white or a colour you pick. Images with very wide colour or high dynamic range are converted to standard colour.
Decoding on your device
Most current browsers decode AVIF themselves. If yours can't, PixMino loads an AVIF decoder the first time it's needed. In both cases the image is converted on your device.
Supported formats
PixMino opens five formats and saves four. HEIC photos from iPhones are saved as JPG or PNG.

Questions
Why can't I open AVIF files?
Some older apps and operating systems don't support AVIF yet. Converting to JPG or PNG solves that.
Is the JPG lower quality than the AVIF?
At Balanced or Best quality the difference is very hard to see. The JPG file will usually be larger.
Can I convert animated AVIF?
PixMino converts still images. An animated AVIF becomes a single still JPG.
